Mr. Steering has sued two Orange County Sheriff’s Department Sergeants for attempt to frame his client, Ace Kelly, for possessing fentanyl and heroin with intent to sell. In Nguyen v. County of Orange, Mr. Steering obtained $800,000.00 for excessive force.

In Zion v. County of Orange, Mr. Steering won a landmark Appeal in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, where the Ninth Circuit held that the police can terminate the threat but not the person.

In Andrews v. County of Orange, Mr. Steering obtain $500,000.00 from the County of Orange for Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputy sheriffs tasing a man who they found sleeping in his car at the local gym, and who called 911 to complain about the deputies.

In Tommy Mark Franks v. County of San Bernardino, Mr. Steering obtained $500,000.00 following plaintiff’s jury verdict in federal court in Orange County for false arrest.

In Gomez v. County of Orange, Mr. Steering obtain a $2.1 million settlement the wrongful death of Jason Gomez in the Orange County Jail due to suffocation via positional asphyxia by the deputies.

In Torrance v. County of Orange, Mr. Steering recovered $380,000.00 for a Dana Point Bank Executive for his being falsely arrested and shot with a taser. causing him to jump out of bed.

In Chamberlain v. County of Orange, Mr. Steering obtained $600,000.00 for the failure to protect pre-trial detainee in the Orange County Jail.

In Spring v. County of Orange, Mr. Steering recovered $500,000.00 for forcing an Orange County Jail inmate to work in the jail kitchen when they knew that he had a hernia.

In Butano v. County of Orange; Mr. Steering obtain $727,500.00 for a South Orange County woman who accused sheriff’s deputies of storming her house, slamming her face into the ground and taking her to jail.

In Spring v. County of Orange, Mr. Steering recovered $500,000.00 for forcing an Orange County Jail inmate to work in the jail kitchen when they knew that he had a hernia.

In Sharp v. County of Orange, Mr. Sharp again obtained $250,000.00 against the Orange County Sheriff’s Department following a landmark Opinion from the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit that held that an arrest warrant for one person does not entitle the officers to detain others at a private residence when arresting the target of the arrest warrant. See, Merritt Sharp III v. County of Orange, 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, No. 15-56146 (9th Cir. 2017).

17 years earlier, in 2000, an Orange County Superior Court jury awarded Merritt Sharp III $1,010,000.00 for a 45-minute detention of his person for the warrantless search of his Auto Body Shop. See, Shop Owner Awarded $1 Million Over Raid, Los Angeles Times, July 20, 2000.

In Baima v. County of Orange, Mr. Steering obtained $200,000.00 for excessive force during a traffic stop by Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputies.

Anaheim Police Terminate Fleering MotoristIn Penaloza v. City of Anaheim, Mr. Steering obtained a $2,900,000.00 settlement for a wrongful police shooting of Eliuth Penaloza by Anaheim police officers.

In Farahani v. City of Santa Ana, Mr. Steering obtained a $612,000.00 jury verdict (plus attorney’s fees) in federal court in Santa Ana for excessive force.
