The City of San Jacinto contracts with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department for its police services, who deploys its deputies to patrol the streets of San Jacinto from its San Jacinto Station located at 60 W. 6th Street

Soboba Indian Reservation sign 2San Jacinto also is home to the Soboba Casino, a casino owned and operated by the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians. The Sobobas are sovereign and self-sufficient in community affairs.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has a sordid history of gun battles with members of the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians on the Soboba Indian Reservation. See also, Tribal leader likens slayings by deputies in shootout to a war, Los Angeles Times, May 14, 2008 (“A wild gun battle between Riverside County sheriff’s deputies and a pair of suspects on the Soboba Indian Reservation left two people dead and tribal members frustrated and demanding answers . . .”). 

The situation between the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians and the government deteriorated to the point where Riverside County Sheriff’s Department deputies and the California Department of Forestry (Cal Fire) would not respond to calls for services on the Soboba Reservation without a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department SWAT team escort.

In the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department eventually negotiated a type of “peace treaty” with the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians. See, Soboba, sheriff negotiate peace after shooting deaths, September 12, 2018.

Steering has also won a trials against the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department for the false arrest and use of excessive force upon a 13 year old boy at San Jacinto High School. Of course, as usual, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office found that all of these Soboba Reservation shootings were justified. In fact the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office always finds shootings of civilians by Riverside County Sheriff’s Department deputies in San Jacinto to be justified, no matter how outrageous those shooting may have been.
