As the old saying goes, “The young lawyer knows the law, but the old lawyer knows the Judge”.

THE LAPD IN THE VENICE AREA OF LOS ANGELES ARE OFTEN BRUTAL AND ARE INSTITUTIONALLY DISHONEST.

The Venice neighborhood in Los Angeles is a unique blend of its world-famous beach, its neighborhood canals, and a brutal LAPD patrolling that area out of LAPD’s Pacific Division Station.

The Venice BoardwalkVenice Beach is a world-famous tourist attraction, with a long boardwalk filled with whacky street vendors and formers; from everything from juggling chain saws to New Age Miracle Cures for just about anything. One would think that the LAPD would be rather jovial at Venice Beach and would want to encourage tourism there. However, due to having to deal with real deal Los Angeles street gangs and other sordid criminal types, the LAPD defines itself as “The Badest Gang in Town”.

This gangster attitude by the LAPD has resulted in LAPD shootings that have been so unjustified that recently the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed criminal homicide charges against LAPD Officer Clifford Proctor for the on-duty shooting of 29-year-old Brendon Glenn in Venice. See,  Former LAPD officer faces arrest for fatal shooting of homeless man in Venice Beach in 2015. ABC7 Los Angeles, October 18, 2024. This shooting was so wrongful that even former LAPD Chief Charlie Beck believed that Officer Proctor should be criminally prosecuted for the shooting. Other wrongful LAPD shootings in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles include the LAPD shooting of an unarmed 35 year old man (Officer-involved shooting investigation in Venice, 1 person shot, FOX 11 Los Angeles, August 14, 2019) and the LAPD SWAT Team shooting of a man allegedly armed with a knife who refused to drop it. See, LAPD Investigates Fatal Shooting During SWAT Operation in West Los Angeles – The Pride LA, The Pride LA, January 18, 2025.

Although LAPD shootings are not all that common in Venice, LAPD beating, tasings and pepper-sprayings are. The LAPD brutality / excessive force incidents almost always happen when civilians verbally protest or verbally challenge police orders or actions and are then deemed by the LAPD officers to be in “Contempt of Cop“.

LAPD Batting Practice in the ParkVerbal protest or verbal challenge of police orders or actions are supposed to be constitutionally protected conduct. See, Houston v. Hill, 482 U.S. 451 (1987) (“The freedom of individuals verbally to oppose or challenge police action without thereby risking arrest is one of the principal characteristics by which we distinguish a free nation from a police state”). However, in Venice, verbal protest or verbal challenge of police orders or actions will get you falsely arrested for resistance offense such as violation of Cal. Penal Code § 69 (resisting officer with force), Cal. Penal Code § 148(a)(1) (resisting/delaying/obstructing a officer), Cal. Penal Code § 240/241 (assault on officer), Cal. Penal Code § 242 / 243(b) & (c) (battery on officer causing injury) and Cal. Penal Code § 245(c) (assault on officer with weapon).

Remember, the only thing that matters when enforcing your rights, is whether you win your case. If you don’t win your case, then you have no rights because you have no way to enforce them.

If you mouth-off to the cops or don’t do what the police tell you to do, one or more of the jurors in your case are just not going to vote for you. If you cuss out the cops, or act like a jerk, you are not going to win your civil rights case.
