Until the Rodney King incident in 1991 most Angelinos were still living in a fantasy world about the LAPD. However, the Rodney King incident marked the beginning of public actually seeing video recorded outrageous LAPD beatings. In 1991 parolee Rodney King was badly beaten by LAPD officers after leading police on an 8-mile vehicle pursuit in Los Angeles. A convoy of LAPD patrol cars and a LAPD helicopter pursued King, who was finally stopped by Hansen Dam Park. The LAPD Officers beat King with their batons, fracturing his skull in 9 places. Because King’s beating was captured on a VHS video recording of a man near the scene of the stop, 4 LAPD Officers were criminally prosecuted by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for their beating of King. The trial was moved from downtown Los Angeles to Simi Valley, California; a suburb heavily populated by police officers and Deputy District Attorneys. When that pro-cop (no matter what) jury acquitted the officers the black population in Los Angeles rioted, burning 5,500 structures in Los Angeles, and resulting in the Governor calling out the National Guard to suppress the riots.
