In addition to wrongful San Gabriel Police Shootings, the citizens of San Gabriel are also plagued with significant street gang activity. Some get in either because the dai lo likes them or an Asian girlfriend sponsored them, Choo said. Asian gang members don’t necessarily hail from broken homes or live in poverty. Many come from affluent families and live double lives, detectives said.

The alleged leader of the Black Dragons, which has been around since 1984, and 22 alleged members were arrested last year as part of a three-year investigation by the FBI and local police. The charges, which stem from three separate cases, include murder, attempted murder, solicitation of murder and dissuading a witness. Investigators say members of another San Gabriel Asian Gang, the Black Dragons, killed, committed home-invasion robberies and extortions, and ran prostitution houses.
